Trail Bark – Kicking Off 2021

I’d like to start off the 2021 Trail Bark with a thank you to our sponsors and contributors for their continued support to HOBs and to the loyal readers, a thanks to you also.

As most of you know, 2020 was a testing year for all but as a species we will adapt overcome and build resilience to the challenges. Pig hunters and hunters in general are creatures of adaptability as we willingly throw ourselves at challenges in our sport usually knowing some of the risks involved but always learning about risks that we didn’t factor in or take in to account. We will either overcome our challenges by facing them head on and adapting to our environments or we will fail miserably and that failure will stew and fester in our heads until we get another chance.

The summer season has brought great fishing opportunities around the country even after the odd flood here and there. I myself have been indulging in a spot of fishing in the sun while my dogs work on their tan and get all fat and sassy before the temperature starts to decline and the mahi begins again. I have managed to catch a few kahawai and my brother was able to land a 20+ pound Salmon out of the Twizle canals after about a 20min scrap.

The Bro with his Salmon

In the past four ‘ish’ months I have hunted my dogs about four times when theres a chilly morning and retired them from the hunt as soon as the sun was well up. We need to remember that dogs don’t release their heat as well as we do and are prone to heat exhaustion which has major side effects including seizures and death. Humans are built to hunt their quarry down over extreme long periods of time in normal conditions where most animals will only have half a days maybe more worth of running time in them until they start cooking inside.

I have been working on some video content for the year of my hunting adventures and as some of you may have read on our social media page, I am also working on printing a physical magazine. The magazine at this stage will be a one off print (issue 65) and will on only available to be purchased on our website. The future for Hooked On Boars is still on the recovery side of things from the pandemic but be assured that we are working hard to bring it back to its former glory.

Lastly, keep those stories and photos rolling in. We wouldn’t be here without them.

Cheers, Harry @ HOB
