The 130lb Black and White Boar – Cheydin Johnson

On 24th September 2020, Me and My Dad Shea were fencing across the river and thought we’d have a quick look with the binoculars above us on the mountain for some pigs as we were keen on going for a bit of a hunt. We saw a good size black boar run back towards the scrub. It would’ve been about 3pm.  We finished up our job and whipped home to pick up our dogs, Winge and Pepper. They’re both Catahoula crosses.

We parked below the spot where we saw that black boar run into earlier and headed in that direction. Pepper and Winge ran down into the creek nearby and through some Mingy-Mingy about 10 metres above the creek. We could hear Pepper bailing as we followed behind then listened as Winge arrived with a howl. A short fight followed and the pig started squealing. We ran as fast as we could to get there and were thrilled to find both dogs on a mean 130lb black and white boar. It had good hooks on it, too.

The words Mean, Meke and Yeeeha could’ve been heard right through the Valley. I stuck it and dad helped me roll it over. I gutted it while Dad watched, then Dad and I carried it out of the gully. It took us about an hour and a half to carry that boar out of the bush to our truck.

That was an awesome hunt that I’ll remember forever. A good end to a hard day’s work.
