As of every hunt goes it starts with the dogs being geared up and loaded onto the Ute, today we decided to take the two pups out ( Lucy n sky) and leave the main home due to a rip a couple of weeks ago when she pulled a good 115lb boar but that’s another story in its self, after a couple of stops at nearly every gas station in Blenheim we were finally on our way , Lucy is a cross bred and is becoming a great finder she is only 1/12 years old and has started finding and pulling pigs as of the bully sky she’s just gone on 2 and has caught the odd pig but she’s our main holder and is a very honest dog! Very hard to come by.

We arrived at our destination pulling up unlocking gates and finally meeting up with the forest manager as she was coming along on the hunt as well. She had brought her dogs ( Rosie, law and another, I forgot her name ) and we all piled into her shagger and started the hunt on top of a ridge and started following tracks but the dogs weren’t keen so we decided to glaze the facings of hills, not much luck there either, we then decided to try our chances on a walk , leaving the Ute at a skid site we started walking down seeing a bit of rooting. We stopped at the end of another skid when our pups took off down the hill about 50 metres, we could still see them as it was young pines and very open. They stopped and starting winding again, now here’s me and Jamie looking at each one another then next thing you know the pups were on!

Jamie Haywood

100 metres down hill not much action as it was only a good 40lb sow so I jumped in and stuck it , we got back to the Ute, sow on the back deck and decided to go to the other side of the island to pick up Jamie’s truck as her reverse crapped itself. We then swapped trucks and started travelling back to the other side where the dogs were quite keen then coming down a hill Lucy and Rosie headed down this hill at quite a pace, Lucy dropping straight down and Rosie going around and down then up and next minute it’s a full on bail!! Pup had found another pig, me and Jamie race down there to see all the dogs doing there job ! Bailing at a good distance but not pushing the boar to hard. Jamie’s loads up his 375 and waits for a perfect opportunity to pull that trigger and BANG ! drops the boaris right on its ass he rush’s in there and Finnish’s the job.

110lb Boar ready to go home and be butchered

Dogs were checked and everything was all clean no rips and dogs were healthy as! Everyone’s stoked as not everyday you get to hunt open country and catch pigs close to the truck !! Definitely a 1st for myself. We decided to call it a day as it was heating up and dogs have already supplied a months worth of meat, pups got a massive pat and good cheeseburger for there top efforts on today’s hunt.

After a good chat and reminiscing on the days event jame and I drove back to Blenheim to weigh this boar, it wasn’t a massive pig weighing in at an average 110lb but with a decent set of hooks we weren’t complaining especially when ya dogs come off clean and you run holders and not bailers ! Open pines is only a once in a years opportunity and I’m thankful we got two good eaters from the whenua.

Kia Ora whanau for reading and keep doing what your doing and where would we be without our companions!
