Quick Pig

Anyway while i was testing the chaps karate kicking every prickle bush i could the other dogs had joined in the bail, they were in some tight shit below a rocky outcrop and the pig must have had a wee charge at the dogs.

E.T with the big boar on his back

Hi, my name is Sam.

It was a wet Saturday, I had spent the day in town with the family. I called my mate ET on the way home to see what his plans for Sunday were. He was keen for a look for a pig that had been getting stuck into a dead sheep on his farm. Its almost lambing time so the farm will be locked up for hunting in a couple of weeks, so got to make the most of it before then.

We made a plan on the phone, “sweet, see you at 6am and we will be into it”. I got up in the morning got my gear together and let a couple of the dogs off, Boy and Blitz. Its an average morning its drizzling but hopefully this pig has been on the sheep and there will be some scent there for the dogs to go off. I get my stuff sorted and headed up the road to Et’s farm.

The farm he is on is up the road off another road and south of the North island. It like the farm I work on is funny enough also called none of your business.

Anyway i arrived there and chucked my collars onto the dog and onto his truck. He has his two dogs there ready to go called pippi and biddy. We head off out back we have to make a hard decision of whether to drive right up to the sheep or park a wee way back and walk the dogs up to it. Park a wee way back is the plan, it doesn’t take long to get to the spot get out, let the dogs loose and start our big couple hundred metre hike to the dead sheep around the foot of the hill. The dogs are gone from the second they got out of the truck, pippi which is Et’s main dog heads off in front of us in the direction of the dead sheep and my two and biddy are up the hill above us hunting around.

A couple minutes later I was starting to think i should start getting round to the area pippi was because she was up closer to where the dead sheep was and boy my main dog was heading back in my direction, so i thought there can’t be too much scent up above us. Then all of a sudden that beautiful song that all pig hunters love was the sound of biddy and blitz breaking into a good steady bail. I checked the gear and the other dogs could hear it as they were making their way there.

E.T with the carry out

We start making our was up the hill the dogs are roughly about 300 metres up from us and between is is a lot of scrub and all of that prickle type, so lucky for the new chaps that Mr and Mrs Hooked on Boars themselves had shouted me for my birthday. Made by Mountain High Clothing, they worked a treat and I didn’t feel a thing through them, they didn’t do a damn thing for my face and hands though. Anyway while i was testing the chaps karate kicking every prickle bush i could the other dogs had joined in the bail, they were in some tight shit below a rocky outcrop and the pig must have had a wee charge at the dogs. I heard a bit of a yelping and the dogs had a bit of a punch up before going back to a bail. By this time Et had closed the gap, I’m still busy winning my fight with the prickles and hear a BANG, good dogs! I leave the prickles feeling sorry for themselves and get to a wee clearing just under where the pig and dogs are Et lets me know its a decent pig.

I call the dogs to check them over, all are fine except the smallest one boy he has a rip in the shoulder and one on the back leg. Nothing serious though so we drag the pig into a wee clearing to get a couple photos and whip his guts out. Its all a down hill drag so off we go and you guessed it, round two prickles. After some smashing and bashing we get the pig out of the scrub and onto an old track. Its a short carry around the foot of the hill to the truck. Pig on, dogs on and back to the house. The pig weight 136lb, I say thanks to Et and head down to the vet to get boy fixed up. Quick clean and a couple of stitches here and there and were off home to rest up. Thanks for reading, check out Mountain High online and see what else they have, and you too could be the next great karate kid.
