My First Boar

On Saturday the 18th of January 2020 I stuck my first boar at my Grandads farm, in the Canterbury High Country with Richard and his dogs.

I spotted it at a place on the farm called Pickaxe Creek. After about a 20-minute drive down the valley, we parked the buggy up next to a little yard and we climbed over the first little hill. That’s when I spotted the boar, but the dogs hadn’t seen or smelt him yet because there was no dew on the ground and no wind.

Suddenly the old dog saw it and that’s when it all started, the dogs were chasing it for ages, like fifteen minutes. Then after all that running around, we finally got it bailed up and Richard took off down the hill. While I was still coming down the steep hill, I heard the gunshot go off and Richard said “we got him!” so I made my way down and stuck it, to finish it off.

Then we took some pictures, gutted it and Richard put it on his back. We made our way out up the ridge and back to the buggy and finally back home to the homestead. Richard messaged me later to let me know the weight and it was 96lbs. I can’t wait to go again!
