John Witham – Across The Ditch

Needless to say I put a bit of effort into finding this pig again and Manu managed just that on a few occasions, resulting in short bails and 2 or 3 km chase with no pig. Around this time I had started a young dog by Manu. Hika had started well and showed a lot of promise, so along with Buster, Manu and old Blackie, he came for a walk, once again after the old runner whose marks I had seen at a dam below a big block of bush. After an hour or so Buster and Manu had disappeared, and although there didn’t appear to be any sign around it was obvious by the dogs actions that something had been around. Young Hika had decided to go too, but in a different direction. 200 meters uphill he barked dragging the other dogs back – the upshot was a fat 100 lb boar. Not a bad find for Hika’s first, but he probably didn’t get the praise he deserved as Manu and Buster had disappeared again. A quick check of the trackers showed them out at 200 meters already and still going. I quickly marked the position of the young boar and followed the dogs. They were now out at 1.5 kms. and the reason soon became clear, as we found the now very familiar square mark of the runner.
